Thank you for a "wake-up call"; often times when I exit my Jeep, my eyes are on the subject I am about to photograph and the means walking straight off the roadway into a ditch if need be. I've got a bad habit of not watching the ground in my anticipation of capturing the moment. I even let my Jeep run on down the roadway one time, while not putting it out of gear....that's a long story.
One thing you might consider for your photo excursions into tall grass would be leather boots. This is only the second rattlesnake I've seen in 16 years, but that might only be because rattlesnakes are supposedly shy and will try to escape rather than confront a human... but it would only take meeting a cranky rattler once...
